Redford has been a concerned environmentalist since returning to his home town of Los Angeles in the 1960s and was dismayed that such an idyllic place was gradually becoming congested, covered in concrete, with polluted air. He does not shrink from speaking his mind on green issues: he strongly opposes destructive drilling projects on public lands, including those offshore, and recently urged President Obama to impose limits on power plant carbon pollution. He’s a board member of America’s National Resources Defence Council, which has named a building after him.
