It’s not just the kids thing though – I once genuinely felt guilty about negotiating more money at work, when I started to think about where the extra cash had come from – had it cost someone worthier a pay rise? Had it come out of someone’s hard-earned budget? I’m not even slightly cut-throat at work, and the one thing that stops me when I try to be is a low-level, but persistent feeling of guilt. If I’m winning, then it means someone else is loosing, and I feel bad about that.
